I can carve with forward (+,+) or duck (+,-) stance, regular or switch with soft/hard boots. As an alpine rider, yes, it's easier to carve with forward stance (both positive binding angles). If you use freeride/ freestyle equipment to carve, you want to use a stiffer boots, bindings and board. If you set up an edge properly, it's all the same for soft/hard boots equipment. For addicted carver, but still want to stick with soft boots, I strongly recommend boardercross board.

You mean practicing switch? If you know how to use your edges and has the basic movement, riding switch is no big difference.
*A good freestyler, should be able to carve comfortably on regular or switch.
Cheers Pan. Just out of curiosity, what's your stance on your board and your height? like how far apart are your bindings and what angle? Is your stance twin (in middle) or a bit set back when you freeride? thanks.
coz i can carve good when setting both of my bindings on positive angle, but when i set my bindings on positive and negative, I cant do a clean heelside carve :S
can you please teach me some tips on how to carve on positive and negative binding angles? :)
My stance has changed a lot recently. I'm 170 and weight 135-40. I like very stiff and long board and my riding style is more like racer. The following are my binding setup last year and this year:
Last year: Alpine: +50,+40, 1 degree front and back cant, 20 inch apart, 5-7 cm setback Freeride: +18, +6, 3 degree front forward lean and 5-7 back forward lean, 23.5 inch apart, 5-7cm setback Freestyle: +12, -3, 3 degree back forward lean, 5 cm setback
This year: Alpine: +50, +45, 3 degree back lift and 1 degree back cant, 19.5 inch apart, 5-6 cm setback Freeride and freestyle: +18, +6, 3 mm riser, 1 degree front forward lean and 3 degree back forward lean, 23 inch apart, 5 cm setback
Recently: Alpine: +55, +50, 1 degree front lift and 3 degree back lift, 19 inch apart, 5cm setback Boardercross: +21, +9, 3mm riser,1 degree front forward lean and 3 degree back forward lean, 22.5 inch apart, 5 cm setback Freeride and freestyle: +12, +3 to -3, w/ or w/o riser, 0-1 degree back forward lean. 22 inch apart, 2-4 cm setback
I change my stance according to the equipment, terrain, and riding style. There is no one setup perfect for everything, but only more efficient setup. I heard Shawn has both positives on his bindings.
There is no secret in carving, it's all about balancing on your edges. Wait for the pressure build-up on your board. Tip your body into the turn and let your board do the work. Start from easy groom terrain, then to steeper slope. Once you master it, you can carve on any place with any setup. Make sure it's not too icy and your edges are not too dull.
